My name is Prabha Kamath and I live in Pune, India. I am a konkani who grew up in Kochi, Kerala. I have lived in many parts of India after my marriage before settling down in Pune. I understand there are many websites and blogs which have many traditional konkani recipes from many places like Goa, Mangalore, Udipi etc. Traditional konkani cooking of people living in Kerala is a little bit different due to the local influence of the place. Therefore, I decided to create this blog which would have all these traditional recipes included in it that might not have been written down in cookbooks or on the internet. Most Konkani people from Kerala grew up writing in Malayalam since konkani language did not have a script until recently. I decided that these recipes were precious enough that they had to be passed on to the next generation. In the modern day, many people are more used to the instant kind of cooking at home, quick and easy! Moreover, many konkani people no longer live in Kerala, they have moved on to many other parts of the country as well as to other parts of the world. This blog has been created for people to find these traditional recipes when they are reminded of the mouth watering tastes of something they had eaten during their childhood or if they have decided to start cooking more authentic konkani food.
I have tried to write down all recipes in a simple way so that it is easy for everyone to understand. The ingredients and proportions mentioned for each recipe are based on my personal style of konkani cooking. I hope that people all over the world whether Konkani or not find these recipes useful and tasty and also the traditional flavors of konkani food from Kerala are kept alive for many generations to come.

i am a manglorean konkani, but, one of my pachi’s is married to a cochin amchigilo and i had once tasted your pathrode and it tasted like heaven. i saw the recipe in your blog. am going to try them next time and am sure my husband will enjoy it.
please keep posting authentic konkani recipes. am now religiously following all your recipes.
Dear Prabhakka,
Thank a million for all those recipes. I am a Konkani from kochi (Paravana) settled in Bangalore as of now and was in Mumbai just after marriage..Everytime I had to make something new in the konkani style I had to call up people and they might give me recipes over phone, and most of the times ,they would miss one or two ingradients like “hing ” etc and the taste will not be same as the typical konkani food what we have..So I am very much thankful to all those recipes.
Dear Sudharsana,
The idea of creating this blog was mainly to benefit persons like you as well as for persons staying/settled abroad.Your comments gives a salutary psychological impact to encourage me to continue to blog and with refinement .
My Love and Greetings to you.
Dear Prabhakka,
Being born in Kochi, I was yearning to get a hold on to our Konkani food specialities, which remained only as pleasant memories. Thank you very much for presenting a bouquet of Konkani specialities, which I accidentally stumbled upon, sometime in March this year. We have tried a few recipes & we can vouch for it! On my hint, a few of my relatives including my recently married daughter are also following you closely for new additions. Looking forward to many more delights from you.
Hi Sucharita,
Thanks a lot for an encouraging comment.Shall publish whatever more recipes as possible.

Usha,
I greatly appreciate your nice comments. I am happy to go thro’ the contents.
MY BEST WISHES TO ALL MY BLOG LOVERS FOR A HAPPY DASSERA.
Dear Prabha,
A little abt me.
This is the second time that I’m visiting ur blog. I was a working woman but since June’10 I called it all off & sat home. But now I will again start working as I realised I am not the sit-at-home type. Also I would say that my hands work slowly than my mind (i.e: I’m fast at my office work and I can tune in fast at ‘n’ jobs at a time) but when it comes to do household work, I’m slow. Try however I cannot increase my speed.
My husband being from Kota, Koondapur wants cooking in that style. My son has been born & brought up in Mumbai wants variety. This results into a tussle and I stand at a loss. Again my husband is used to eating only a few varieties of veggies which also is irritating for me as any other vegetable if cooked has to be eaten by me alone.
I am searching for a typical Manglorean Konkani style Breakfast-Lunch-Snack-Dinner fare which probably could help me out.
If possible could you e-mail me how can I make it as easy as possible on the above mentioned fare when I take up on the job as I shall not be having much time in my hands. My husband does not even like outside food or cooked by some other lady if kept. Morning if I start my day at 5.30 a.m then I can probably get at the most 1 1/4 hour and evening depends upon the time I reach which may be latest by 9 to 9.30 p.m.
We are only 4 at home but cooking sometimes gives me goosebumps as I have all fussy eaters around.
Rgds,
Savita Hegde
Namaskar ,

Hello Prabhakka,
It was by accident that I came across this site. What a happy accident I must say! Really mouthwatering recipes. Simple, precise and very easy-to-follow style of writing. I am based in Abu Dhabi and I look forward to trying some recipes…. and revive my taste buds with some lip smaking amchi food…like my wife makes back in India!
Thanks
Thanks Ganesh. I am extremely happy that people from all parts of the globe are benefited by my recipe blog.
My Dear Prabhakki,
This is a really wonderful cook blog. Ammi Kochikaraleche randap vegale matta nave. Tumgele cook blog makka chaan upkara padtha. Aaji, gharkade soji bhajjili ghasshi kelli, and that too after almost 3-4 years. And this lunch is dedicated to you. Thanks to you.
My grandma passed away in 2006 and after that we never cooked any wonderful konkani food, except for pej, toy and upkari and occassionaly dhavi ghasshi.
I especially missed her style of cooking and was lost for those items she cooked.
But now it is really good that I came across this, looking forward to many more delicious recipes.
Best wishes,
Anitha
Hi Anitha,
Thanks. I am extremly happy that people like you are benefited by my recipe blog.I am trying my best to write as many authentic konkani recipes as possible.

GLAD YOU ALL ARE REVIVING THIS AMCHI CUISINE–
THRO YOUR BLOG- FACEBOOK
I am a saraswat settled in Chennai for over 60 yrs -Mangalore was my birth place-
When we say ” Amgale Kodial Gaon –Mangalore city, so much changed in the last 5 years. Most Heritage Buildings are lost —
Traditional hotels losing out to fast food & pizza joints-
Hampankatta market area bought -shifted–
HOTEL FOOD ?–The famed Taj-mahal hotel branch in Hampankatte -temple area is now closed; place shifted to a new location is much changed and even their Tuppa dosa is altered or missing. Some old amchi items are available in few places …..but is very. very limited.
The 2 hotels behind our Sri Vaman Ashram Math viz Hanuman Cafe & Sri Rama Hotel still have a few items like Pathrado, Theek Roti , Biscuit Roti, all types of Bondas and and Neer Dosai .-some were packed and taken to the train–.For the return train journey dep. 1pm I went to pick up Dahi Rice for my Grandson at Noon and the hotel Prop sadly said to me—” Sorry,–WE do not make it any more now……as there is no demand!!…for Dahi rice.
Then the final straw was in Sri Rama’s Hotel, also owned by Amchi , where I saw —
Todays Spl on the Blackboard—“Tandoori Roti …Palak.. Paneer etc”.
I thought-should I say to him-.Kee Galle Bhai saab-(he may retort)—
Wah boliye Saab – ab mai ne–Manglore ko badiya Punjab da Dhaba banadiya.
No Amchi khaana –Khotta or Moode & Kheer in sight- nor Madgane / kheer , Patholi sighted at all in Kodial gaonche hotels—
nor most of the items that our Amchi recipes and cook books mention; and to a Elder “Foodie”- of Amchi khaana..like me— missed it-
All food items seen in earlier years, now loosing to fast food & junk food..to some extent
WE must revive this Amchi Food culture and all
Best wishes to U–to your blog – & family

Dear Captain,
I fully endorse your views. There are lot of things happening, which are beyond anybody’s control, not only in our community, but also applicable to all and all places, especially in India . These are the results of the economic development and population growth, which has also changed the hotel business scenario based on demand and supply. It has also created lot of migration, resulting in nuclear families, thereby creating a loss in valuable dissemination of values from the elders, as also losing touch with the nature and sometimes gifted culinary expertise. It is happening mainly because of shortage of time, pressure of the present day living, work pressures, resulting in bringing the irritating nature home, aping the west blindly and resorting to burger+coke+fast food-filled life, competition in every field, including academics. It is a non-stoppable thing. Mangalore is a part of this development. Advice or preachings do not help. But, as is the case everwhere, there are rays of hope lingering. By looking at the clicks generated on my blog, I can discern that there are still quite a large segment of our community yearning for authentic Konkani fare and it looks that they are really enjoying it. This blog is basically meant for people like them and also for persons who are not exposed to the Konkani preparartions in their childhood, but at the same time, they and their families are yearning for authentic recipes. Besides, this can remain as a contribution of mine to the posterity who would like to look back and create and enjoy a Konkani fare, when they get fed up with their fast+coke food routine in future, when we may no more be in existence.
By the By, I profusely thank you for taking time out, viewing my blog and giving a detailed comment of the present day conditions and for your nice appraisal of the blog.
Namaskar
Thanks your very good responsie which covers the subject so well-came in time as I am doing a study paper (3rd time)on Project Amchis -set in motion by KSA -Shri Mahesh Kalyanpur of Mumbai. Paper being addressed now.
I have been in HR/ Adm for along time and have shared on this inc. Saraswat Settlements in Kanaras dwindling -sold out etc. This is another subject -If you wish will post… but is an altogether different topic, from Cuisine matters of this blog site blog –
Yes we –many of us elders agree Appreciate ad preserve what is to the best extent -God takes care ahead in his own way.
Finally: Time indeed is a Great Leveller with Kaal Chakra.
Circumstance too as Somerset Maugham said “Man is a Creature of Circumstance”

Hi Prabha,
You are providing a valuable service to Dorkes like me who have lived abroad for 3 or 4 decades. I forwarded this link to my kids who ate Bapammas cooking but she’s been gone almost 10 yrs. Between Aayis recipes blog and yours the konkani foodies should have a field day. I am hoping that some day you will be able to do videos of the dishes too. I now understand why no Zhalke randayi’s are listed since most Kerala dorkes are pure veg.
God Bless and Good Luck. Keep them coming.
Thanks,
VP
Pai Mam,
I am extremely delighted to receive such a good comment.
I convey my sincere thanks for the same.
a small modification is tentatively suggested in your ‘about’ narration as follows:
…Most Konkani people from Kerala grew up writing in Malayalam since konkani language did not have a script until recently…
this may kindly be modified as below:
…Most Konkani people from Kerala grew up writing in Malayalam since there was no written material available in Konkani, and that was mostly the available language and medium in schools…
Hi! Saratchandra,
The keen interest shown in my blog indicating some modification, is really very encouraging. My great appreciation for the same and as suggested, shall do the needful.
Dear Mrs Prabha,
Your website is getting much recommended around..
My daughter at Bangalore finds it very useful..
Thank you..and congrats..

Dear Prabhamai,
Thank you for the recipes for our tasty dishes. I am not a great cook by any standards, so I find your direction and comments on how the dish should evolve really useful.
With thanks and warm regards,
Kshama Pai
Thank you, Kshama for the good acceptance of my konkani blog. Which place are you from?
Dear Prabha ….. I was going to write a salutation of ‘ Prabha-akka’, but I have belatedly realised that I am probably …. no, make that ‘certainly’ ….. older than you. ( Time flies when you are having fun -).
I am a tax accountant, in Cleveland, Ohio, USA and I like to cook. Firstly, because I think I have ADHD and OCD,…. and various other syndromes … and I tend to get bored easily and cooking is a pleasure …. and secondly to confound, and even irritate, my ever-critical wife. My wife, who is a very busy woman, ( we’ve been married ~ 40 years, give or take 10 years – )- who can survive, and definitely thrive, just on bread – and butter and boiled rice – thank you, very much.
Also we are only 2 people in the house, our 2 girls have fled the nest and are muddling through life, `800 miles away. Anyway, whatever I cook, is TOO much and my wife complains about all the ‘shiyaley’ ( old, stale) food that she has to finish !@#! I tell her, don’t look at me …. I only cooked it, ….. I’m not going to eat it, as well.!@!
I am a saraswat, cant read kannada or marathi, so Rasachandrika was no use. I have a well thumbed, dog eared copy of the AMKA American Midwest Konkani Assn. cookbook – but now, finally I have realized that the best recipes are floating in the ‘air’ or on the ‘clouds’ because of dedicated personae like you. God bless you and others for your dedication, sincerity and your passion !!!
Sorry for the rant. Maybe you may get a small smile out of this and a lighter heart for the rest of the day. Maybe not. If you’re irritated, just use your energy to create one more stomach rumbling, head salivating, erotic exotic konkani dish that can charm our socks off.
Now, to look for that Pumpkin coconut gozzu-gojju-gaazu that I originally came to this website for . Terrible english, never end your sentence with a preposition. Love.
hi prabha aunty, thank you for your website! i’m konkani, but born and brought up (and living) in US – California. i’ve purchased rasachandrika, and other konkani saraswat cookbooks, but sometimes there are still recipes missing that i go looking for, sometimes late at night so i can’t call my amma! 🙂 so i’m so thankful that you’ve shared all your recipes here for our benefit.
also, my maternal grandparents were from south (grandfather from kasaragod grandmother from coimbatore) so i really appreciate seeing your keralan-konkani recipes – they are closer to my mother’s cooking than the more marathi-influenced recipes.
i hope one day you will consider publishing your recipes in a book. i think many would be interested in purchasing it. 🙂 thank you again!!
Dear Mr a.
Thank you for your nice comment. These days traditional recipes are fading away with the new innovated recipes with the new generation people. My intention is to make available these recipes for the public. Ther are books here and there for the recipes of kochi Konkani. But they are written in Malayalam in most of the cases. I am also interested in publishing a book, but ia delayed due to personal reasons. You can wait for some more time.
By the way give your name also while writng comment.
wrte your name also while writing
